How to Feel Lighter: Finding Your Next Right Move When Life Feels Heavy
“What do you need to do to feel lighter?”
This is a question my friend asked me today on our lunch walk, and as I’m sitting here at the coffee shop working - the magnitude of that question sank in.
On our walk we were catching up and she asked how my week was, I mentioned I was feeling pretty down overall and there’s just been a lot of hard things to navigate recently. It all feels so heavy and stagnant and I don’t know what to do next.
She asked me that question… “what do you think you need to do to feel lighter?”
& my answer right away was “this” - spending intention time with friends, putting my phone down (I usually don’t bring it on our walks), having good conversations, getting fresh air, etc etc etc.
Which are all very simple and very feasible things that I can do.
Without me realizing it, she solved my problems by asking me a simple question.
Recognizing the Power of Small Steps
What I realized while I’m sitting here working is that she did the thing that I didn’t do. Ask what the next right move it. & That’s something that I’ve really gotten out of the habit of doing lately.
Things have felt so permanently and eternally heavy for me since early October when I found out about my huge job change, essentially losing the business I spent the last 5.5 years building and having to start over. Having to ask myself “well, what comes next” & “will I be okay” & “how can I do this?”.
And I got into the habit of asking myself all of these BIG questions, that feel impossible to ask and are making me rush around trying out every different career path and seeing if it’s the perfect fit for me (in my head), and then feeling more lost and hopeless than before.
Shifting Focus to the Present Moment
I didn’t ask myself what the next right move was. Instead of sitting back panicking and wondering what could possibly be the business venture I want to pursue for my entire future, I could have spent time asking myself what I wanted, how I want to feel, and how I can embody that right here, right now.
So thank you Emily, for being an incredible friend in this small moment, that moved some mountains I’ve been sitting at the bottom of for 6 weeks now. It’s time to climb.
& I have to ask you now -
What’s your next right move?
Only you know the answer to that.
But if you’re searching for guidance, I’m noticing two weeks in that journaling can be a powerful place to start. It’s amazing how putting thoughts to paper can help you gain clarity and lighten the load you’re carrying.
