The #1 Thing Holding You Back From Healing

Did you know that you cannot heal if you're living in chronic stress?

It’s subconscious, which means that even if you know on a conscious level that you’re safe, your brain might not.

Healing along with the other “non-essential” but vital processes within our bodies such as metabolism, memory function, digestion, reproduction, tissue repair, and more are halted when you live in chronic stress.

When you don’t create a calm state after a stressful event (most of us don’t know how), it can lead to being “stuck” in that stress-response state & your body isn’t able to activate the “rest and digest” portion of the nervous system.

I’m convinced that this is why we are seeing SO many diagnoses of PCOS, infertility, insulin resistance, IBS, food intolerances, and more.

I keep asking myself, if the nervous system is the key to healing, why didn’t we see these diagnoses more frequently before? I come back to 2 factors…

1. There has never been a generation that is as “plugged in” from the time of childhood/early adulthood. Our bodies don’t know the difference between a “threat” of someone unfolding you or leaving a snarky comment, versus encountering a bear on a hike. Both will activate the sympathetic nervous system which activates fight / flight / freeze. 

2. Generational trauma. Did you know that the egg you were formed from was already formed when your mother was in the womb? That means that things your grandmother experienced directly impacted your mother, and you on a genetic level (impacting the function of the gene, not the DNA itself).

Okay that’s heavy and a little nerve wracking (no pun intended) so what do we do about this?

1. Deactivate the SNS (sympathetic nervous system)

2. Activate your PNS (parasympathetic nervous system)

A few examples of habits that can deactivate the SNS: meditation, yoga, somatic healing work, deep breathing

& you can activate the PNS by doing those same things. That’s right, they go hand in hand like flipping a switch.

My tip? Choose one of these habits and try it out daily for the next 5 days. Pay attention to how you feel, how your body feels, and what changes. I’d love for you to come back after 5 days and share an update!
